There are many gay accommodations in Maspalomas : gay hotels, gay apartments, gay bungalows, or gay villas, but not all are equal and do not offer the same quality or the same services. How to be sure to choose the right one ? Here are our tips for not making mistakes.
There are nearly twenty gay bungalow complexes in Maspalomas, several gay hotels, and many apartments or villas. The offer is so important that it can be difficult to navigate when making a choice. How can I be sure not to make a mistake and not to fall into a tourist trap ? Here are some simple rules to follow or questions to ask when booking your accommodation.
1 - Is that a real gay-only accommodation ?
Remember that "gay-friendly" doesn't mean "gay-only" !! And "hetero-friendly" even less... Several tourist companies take advantage of the fact that Gran Canaria is the Number one gay destination in Europe to try to monopolize the gay clientele. They put the flag on their door or on their website to attract travelers, but in fact, they are absolutely not gay. They are just imitations. And when you arrive, the vibe is nothing like real gay accommodation.
To avoid this kind of inconvenience, always check that the staff of the establishment is really 100% male and if the owner is gay. This is always a good clue. If the business is managed by a big company or an anonymous trade, it could be just a tourist trap. If there is a woman waiting for you at the reception or answering the phone, it clearly means that it's not a 100% male establishment. If the establishment is open to heterosexuals, straight couples, women, and their friends, this clearly means that the other customers around you will not be all gay. Ultimately, check if the accommodation advertises itself in a local gay guide or gay publication; it is always a sign of authenticity and commitment to the gay community.
2 - Close or far from the gay scene ?
Maspalomas is a very extensive seaside resort that includes several very different and quite distant areas from each other. When booking your accommodation, you should ask yourself if you want to stay near or far from the gay scene. If you choose to be close to the gay scene, it means that you won't have to take a taxi or car to get around or go out at night and you will have all the necessary services in your immediate surroundings.
The gay scene in Masplaomas is concentrated around the Yumbo Centrum, Avenida de Tirajana, or the Cita shopping center, and all of them are located in Playa del Inglés. So if you want to book near the gay scene, you must choose an establishment located in Playa del Inglés. Maspalomas is not enough indication to be near the gay scene. You have to check that you will be staying in Playa del Ingles.
If you don't need to be near the gay scene, you can choose outlying areas of Maspalomas such as Sonnenland, Campo Internacional, San Fernando, or San Agustin, but this means you will still need a car or a taxi to get around, and you have no service nearby.
3 - A quiet place or a noisy place ?
Spain is the land of parties, beaches, sun, sangria, and paella, but it is also one of the noisiest countries in the world. You will therefore have to ask yourself the question of your noise ratio when booking your gay accommodation. In Maspalomas, there are clearly two types of gay places : those that are quiet and those that are loud.
Some hotels and bungalow complexes have a pool bar with sophisticated audio systems and organize pool parties, concerts, water games, sports activities or shows. They collaborate with gay events or have their own leisure programs and of course, all this results in very entertaining but also very noisy places. If you like parties, action, and fun above all else, you've come to the right place, but if you're looking for a quiet place to rest, you'll be very unhappy.
If you are looking for a place to sleep well in the morning and throughout the day, spend time in silence, relax and enjoy peace, it is also possible in Maspalomas, but you must check that your accommodation is a place without a pool party without tourist entertainment and that there is no event planned in the period you are coming.
The best way to find out is to read the establishment's web page, check social networks, or even call reception to be sure. At the same time, you can check if the establishment is located in a quiet area of the seaside resort or if the neighborhood is noisy (such as if a night entertainment center is next door or if there are any bars or discos in the area). If you want peace, be careful not to be too close to the Yumbo Centrum, the Cita Shopping Centre or the Holiday World, which are generally very noisy, even during the night.
4 - What kind of equipment or services do you need ?
Gay accommodation in Maspalomas may have many amenities, equipment and services specifically dedicated to gay men, but not all establishments are created equal or offer the same benefits. Of course, all of them have a swimming pool, sunbeds and free wifi, but, for example, some have jaccuzi and some do not, some have cruising areas and some do not, some have a restaurant or cafeteria and some do not, some have massage services and some do not, some have a steam sauna and some do not, some have a fitness room and some do not, some are clothing optional and some do not, etc.
It is important to ask yourself what you really need and what is essential for you during your stay in Maspalomas. Ask yourself the right questions. To find the answers and be sure of your choice, do not hesitate once again to consult the website of the establishment and the social networks. And if needed, feel free to contact the reception desk by phone or by mail; they will be happy to inform you and that will give you a good idea of the customer service they have and of the quality of the welcome you will receive on site.
